How this is worked out. Savings are measured against paying the whole check in cash, the same as in the article.
  • inKind, prepaid credits: buys the pre-tip bill in credits at the bonus rate, earns your non-dining card rate on that purchase, then puts the tip on your card at the dining rate. inKind credits cannot cover a tip.
  • inKind, cash back and Seated both earn on the pre-tip amount only, with card rewards on the full check.
  • Blackbird, preloaded $FLY: buys the whole check in $FLY at the bonus rate, earning your non-dining rate on that purchase. $FLY can cover the tip.
  • Cash back counts as savings on the assumption that dining credit is as good as cash if you eat out regularly. Restaurant specific deals and Blackbird challenges are not modelled here.
